New code on icewhistle.com
This site runs a custom-built content management system that I wrote when I was teaching myself Rails.  As it was a learning project, the code was full of bugs and suffered from generally poor design.  This afternoon I ripped out the guts and bashed out some new code, essentially from scratch.  The goal is reduce the ridiculous number of 500 errors that was occuring because I was aggregating too many RSS feeds together.

You may notice that this site is generally less complicated now.  I have decided to stop reBlogging -- there are already a zillion pointless sites out there where people repost other content, and most of those actually take the time to comment on what they are reposting, which I didn't even bother doing.  The old reblog data will sit in the history of the posts unless people start to find it confusing when searching, in which case I'll wipe it.  I've added my delicious bookmarks to the sidebar here which will serve the same purpose.

This "blog" will continue to exist as a place for me to write general thoughts and post news and updates about my work/projects.  I will continue to use blindness as a tumblr-style blog for quick and dirty stuff, and I will be merging the other various Wordpress installations into this main CMS.  The blog content will now be visible from the frontpage, which was previously reserved for "news" and announcement (which will now be found on every page, at the top).

Thanks for reading this far.

Where I've been.

Well, as anyone looking over the inactivity on this blog will have quickly figured out, the Ubermann sleep schedule did not work for me.  I couldn't keep my eyes open; eventually I just crashed again in the most horrible way, and I realised it was making my day-to-day existence extremely painful.  It's a difficult schedule to hold while attempting to get situated in a new city/surroundings, so I abandoned it.  I never bothered to even post about it here out of embarassment.

I would like to attempt it again at some point - the benefits just sound too fanastic to be true.  When this will happen though, I do not know.

Then, the election happened so I was so focused on blogs/polls/cable news covereage that I didn't give any thought to blogging.

I still intend to reorganise this site in the future, moving the blog to the front page and other things like that. I'm also going to re-do the reblogging, so instead of just re-posting something verbatim I will excerpt it and comment, like all proper rebloggers.

I've been busy with some other projects so icewhistle.com is the lowest of my priorities.

Reblog content now here
The icewhistle reblog is now found at http://www.icewhistle.com/reblog/ instead of the old location. Please note the distinct RSS feeds for reBlog and other posts. I plan to add more features to this CMS, like searching, in the next few weeks.

RSS feed

There is now an RSS feed available for the icewhistle.com blog posts (including these announcements).

Coming soon will be an aggregated feed containing these posts and all of the other web projects (blindness, reblog, etc.).

Testing, testing.

I don't really need another blog as I already have a tumblelog and a reblog, plus I use Wordpress installs to keep notes I jot down on books and films, and also for the postcard art that I occasionally do.  Yet, here we go with another one, because I've been playing around with designing this content management system for icewhistle.com and a blog is of course a crucial part of a CMS.

I suppose I will use this for longform posts, if I ever feel the desire to write any, and eventually I will probably integrate the tumblelog and the reblog into this, so it's all coming from one database.  Cause why use Wordpress if you can write your own?  This will involve adding support for the Metaweblog RPC and proper RSS handling, etc.

So while this is a huge sprawling mess now I do have plans to kick it all into a uniform shape soon.  It's fun working out these things in Ruby on Rails, even if my shared hosting isn't the best for supporting it (no disrespect though, they are great in other ways).

So here's the inaugural post, which I will hide behind the front page for now.  Comments, RSS and all the other standard blogjunk to come later.
